Choose Cichlids for Your Aquarium!!! Choose Cichlasoma Cichlids!

I made my first fresh-water aquarium in primary school and I have kept many different species of fresh-water fishes since. I have kept live-bearing mollies and guppies, gouramis, tetras, but no fishes are as interesting and exquisitely thrilling as the cichlids. I had cichlids like angelfishes, oscars and discuses, but I never stopped be astonished by the Cichlasoma genus.

The Cichlasoma fishes are colorful, ferocious, passionate, powerful and territorial as the most of the cichlids are. They are the most resilient of all the cichlids that I have kept. In my life I was always finding myself suddenly busy with other stuff as well. Sudden work will occur and sudden travels. Many times I needed to be away on a trip or very busy for even a month and unfortunately I would have found many of my aquarium fishes dead. But very very seldom I would have found a dead cichlid and incredibly almost never a dead Cichlasoma.

The second exciting thing that I find intriguing about the cichlids is their parental instincts. All the fishes in the Cichlid family are fierce defenders of their family and attack everything that comes close to their young ones. The Cichlasomas again were the most ferocious moms and dads, attacking even my hand when they had juveniles in the aquarium.

I had a pair of Cichlasomas in my main aquarium and one day I noticed that they were very aggressive. The Cichlasoma dad kept all the other fishes of the aquarium in one corner while the Cichlasoma mom was circling around the stone. When I lift up the stone I saw like 200 or 300 small Cichlasoma eggs in a hole under and behind the stone. The pair managed to dig out a hole behind the stone, so I did not noticed their nest before. The really amazing thing was their parental instinct and fierceness in defending territory while parenting. The pair managed to protect almost 90% of the aquarium space keeping away almost 20 different fishes in the other 10%.

A great family of fishes, a great genus, a great thrill!!! My recommendation is to choose cichlids for your aquarium and even more choose the Cichlasomas genus!!!

Talking about choices. I found this incredible guide on cichlids. Being a passionate Cichlasoma genus fan I would also like to recommend another e-book “Oscar Fish Secrets - The Ultimate Guide to Keeping and Breeding Oscar Fish”. If the Cichlasoma fishes are the “colorful pit bulls” of the aquariums, the Oscars, genus Astronotus are the “tigers” of the aquariums. They can grow up to 35cm and are as resilient, ferocious and parential as the Cichlasoma. Learn all the details about keeping and breeding the “tiger” cichlids for only $37.00.

The Cichlasoma and Oscar fishes are regarded as territorial, powerful and therefore aggressive fishes, the "pit bulls" and "tigers" of the aquariums. but not all cichlids are like that. The discuses, from genus Symphysodon, and the angelfishes, from genus Pterophyllum are the “kings” and “angels” of the aquariums.
